Supporting Physical Education and Activity in Primary Schools.
Joint seminar organised and facilitated by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Sports Partnership, Kildare Sports Partnership and South Dublin County Sports Partnership.
Over 140 teachers from 100 schools attended the above primary schools sports and physical activity seminar held in the Citywest Hotel yesterday, Tuesday 22 September. Teachers and principals from Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, Kildare, South Dublin and further afield were introduced to research finding from Sport Ireland on the rates of primary school children participating in sport, both in an outside school, and the effect that participation has on a child’s prospect of a lifelong involvement in sport, be it individual or team-based.
Further, delegates heard informative presentations from the Professional Development Service for Teachers, Irish Primary PE Association, Cara Adapted Physical Activity Centre and the Local Sports Partnership Network.
The highlight for many teachers were the three primary schools that presented topics that work well for them, for example working towards the inclusion of children with disabilities into their PE class, working as a school towards the Active Schools Flag, getting the most from their teacher talents and resources to maximise effect.
The seminar was the second in a series coordinated by the three Local Sports Partnerships. A similar seminar was held in 2014 for second-level PE teachers. Both events were kindly supported by Sport Ireland and the Local Education Centres.
