Another Core Credit Union dlr Community 5K!
The seventh annual Core Credit Union dlr Community 5K took place on the 10th October in Kilbogget Park. A key part of the County’s Festival of Inclusion, this was a fun event for everyone, providing a great opportunity for any age, ability or fitness level to get out and active.
The 1,125 participants included hundreds of families, runners, walkers and those out to have a great time while getting active in a wonderful local park. After a warm-up taken by staff from dlr Leisure Loughlinstown, An Leas Cathaoirleach, Cllr. Josepha Madigan, officially welcomed everyone to the event. A minutes silence was then held in memory and support of the families involved in the terrible tragedy in Carrickmines.
When the hooter then sounded participants ran, jogged, pushed or walked to the finish line. Everyone received an event t-shirt and refreshments with the kids also sporting an event medal for their hard work.
The Core Credit Union dlr Community 5K is organised by a committee made up of members from: dlr Sports Partnership, the County Councils Social Inclusion Unit and Community Department, the HSE’s Health Promotion Unit, Cabinteely Athletics and Soccer Clubs as well as the Core Credit Union. In addition the support from An Garda Síochána, Dublin Civil Defence and the Councils Parks Department for this event every year is invaluable and helps ensure the safety of all the participants.
An Leas Cathaoirleach, commented that ‘it is the volunteers, of course, that are the backbone to the smooth running of any successful event so I would like to take the opportunity to thank all who have volunteered today in particular those from the local clubs, Sallynoggin College and the local Volunteer Centre.’
Funding for this event was provided by Core Credit Union, Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council and the HSE Health Promotion Unit.
Shane McArdle, Coordinator with Dún Laoghaire Rathdown Sports Partnership, commented ‘This event has gone from strength to strength both in terms of participants and also how it engages the local community. It’s a shining example of how local agencies can work together to create and role out a participation event for all.’

Shane McArdle, Coordinator with dlr Sports Partnership, commented ‘the popularity of this fantastic event can be easily measured by the increase in numbers every year from the 130 participants we had back in 2009. This is a community event; people want to return each year because of the fun and family atmosphere that is generated.’
