If you are looking for something to get you on the road to a healthy and active 2020, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Sports Partnership have a few ideas for you. We are organising a range of initiaitives to help you find an activity that is fun and appropriate to your fitness level.
Here is a list of some of the events and programmes set for January and February, but there are lots of other sports and activities taking place in the County, so just contact us to discuss what might suit you.
- Operation Transformation Walk Event
Our annual free 4km public walk will be held on the 18th January at 11am in Marlay Park. This event is being held in conjunction with RTE’s Operation Transformation programme. On this day every County in Ireland will have a similar event to cater for all levels of fitness, but in particular those looking to start exercising again.
- Walking For Health Programme
Starting on the 25th January, this 6-week walking programme is taking place in Marlay Park on Saturday mornings at 11am. It will cater for all fitness levels and will be a great excuse to get out, be active and make new friends. Meeting at the College Road entrance playground, each week the group will walk for approximately 45 minutes and include a range of exercises to improve mobility.
- Multi-Sport Junior Club
Parkrun is a free volunteer lead weekly 5km event for runners and walkers of all standards, which takes place every Saturday at 9:30am in Marlay, Shanganagh and Cabinteely Parks. It is not a race, but a 5k timed run and it can really be whatever you want it to be, whether that's for fun or as part of a training plan. All you need to do is register at www.parkrun.ie and then go along on the Saturdays.
- Junior Parkrun
Junior parkrun is a shorter 2k run for children aged between 4 and 14. There are two venues in the County – Marlay, Deerpark and Ballyogan– which are open to all, free, safe and easy to take part in. All you need to do is register at www.parkrun.ie and then go along on the Sundays.
- Men on the Move
If you are a man and over 18yrs old, we have a great fun activity programme starting on the 21st January across two evenings for 12 weeks in Ballyogan. It will focus on those returning to exercise and will be a great excuse to get out, be active and make new friends. The sessions will be a mix of indoor & outdoor activities. There is no charge for this programme, but booking is essential.
- Women on the Move
If you are looking to do something and not quite sure what you like, why not join us in Ballyogan, for 4 weeks of fun taster activities to see what might suit you. There is no cost for this programme. Activities include walking, Pilates, introduction to using a gym and more. Starting the morning of Wednesday 23rd January, the group will meet in the lobby of the Family Resource Centre. Activities will finish with a well-deserved tea/coffee and chat.
- Active Exercise
Are you over 55 and living in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown? If so why not come along to an Active Exercise session in the dlr Leisure centres where you can try new activities and have fun. These sessions take place on various mornings in each of the four public leisure facilities in the County - Meadowbrook, Loughlinstown, Monkstown and Ballyogan. The focus is on activities and light exercises that promote physical activity, mobility and flexibility.
- The Buggy Brigade
Are you a new parent and want to meet up for some fun activity for any fitness levels and ability? Organised by dlr Leisure Ballyogan and Dún Laoghaire Rathdown Sports Partnership the group will take part in weekly hour long activity sessions. Classes will be fun and social where you will get into shape while having fun and making new friends for you and your baby.
- Try a New Sport or Join a Club
We have nearly 300 clubs based in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown across nearly any sport you can think of from Archery to Skiing to Volleyball. - Cycling in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown
There are a host of cycle friendly routes in the County. From the urban parks, to the mountain trails to the beautiful sea front, there are numerous opportunities for all to get out cycling. - Head up to the Dublin Mountains
The Dublin Mountains is an exciting recreational facility for the young and old. Whether you are interested in a walk with the family, a cross county hike or a spin on a mountain bike, the trails and forests of the Dublin Mountains has something for everyone. - Volunteer Training Workshops
