One of our most enjoyable initiatives this year, The Daily Mile Schools Event, took place in Marlay Park on Thursday 9th May. Nearly 1,300 primary school children from six schools around the County ran a mile route within Marlay Park and were awarded a medal of achievement at the finish line.
This event was held to celebrate the hard work and dedication of the students to the Daily Mile initiative throughout their school year. A simple concept where students leave their desks for 15 minutes a day to run a mile around their yard or local green space. It doesn’t require equipment set up, helps children increase their fitness while improving concentration levels.
We have a range of schools in the County currently incorporating the Daily Mile Initiative into their school day and 6 of these schools attended the Marlay Park Event - Loreto Dalkey Primary School, Divine Word National School, St Bridgid’s Boys National School, Our Ladys Girls NS Ballinteer, Holy Trinity & St Attractas Senior National School.
Shane Mc Ardle, Coordinator in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Sports Partnership commented ‘It’s great to see so many children in Marlay Park today utilising this marvellous local resource. The route we have chosen today replicates the Junior ParkRun route which takes place here every Sunday morning for children from 4-14 yrs. We want the hundreds of kids here today to go home and encourage their mums, dads, siblings to link in at the weekends to their local ParkRun and create an active and healthy family ethos.’
Congratulations to all the children and teachers that attended today!!! Also thanks to Athletics Ireland and ParkRun volunteers who assisted during the event.
