boxing july 6Monkstown International Box Cup 2016 became Europe’s largest Boxing Tournament with over 900 boxers from 11 different countries.

Most parts of south Dublin & north Wicklow were absolutely buzzing with boxing teams from all over Europe who had arrived for the Monkstown International Box Cup 2016 at the weekend. Over 900 boxers, 500 coaches, 100 Officials & 2000 spectators of family/supporters packed into the Holy Child Community School Sports Hall in Sallynoggin for 3 days of boxing from 7am each morning to 11pm Fri/Sat night & 7pm Sunday night.

The boxing tournament which had Four boxing rings running simultaneously throughout the 3 days, was for Boys & Girls aged from 9 to 19 and was attended by clubs from 11 different countries.

It was amazing to see Dun Laoghaire town centre packed out with all these boys & girls in their representative club tracksuits. Every Hotel/B&B/Guesthouse was booked out well in advance, all the local restaurants/bars had an upsurge in custom from the boxing event.

The planning of the event has been ongoing since its previous event last July. All of the 45 people working at the event are doing so on a voluntary basis. The club has set up 2 separate committee’s to help deal with the amount of entries. In its 4 year existence now and has grown from Year1: 75 boxers, Year2: 300 Boxers, Year3: 500 Boxers and now in its 4th Year: 920 boxers.
