Walking Event for European Mobility Week
To mark European Mobility Week (September 16th to the 22nd), Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council has organised a number of fun events and activities for the week. The main event on Saturday 17th at 3pm is a 5km walk around the scenic Marlay Park followed by light refreshments. This is a free event and is open to all ages and abilities.
On Sunday 18th, the Dublin Mountain Partnership has organised a forest family fun day in Tibradden Forest featuring plenty of outdoor activities including mountain biking.
The Council is also promoting sustainable travel in schools with the launch of an Art Competition for primary and secondary schools in the County. A display of electric bikes will be held during the week near the Council offices. Longer term initiatives to promote sustainable transport in the County include the provision of new cycle parking, the upgrade of cycle and pedestrian facilities and the provision of cycle training in schools.
European Mobility Week takes place every September to encourage commuters to occasionally try more sustainable transport options rather than always using the private car for all journeys. The 2011 Mobility Week theme 'Alternative Travel' encourages people to try more sustainble travel modes (walking, cycling, public transport, car share) rather than always driving, in particular for short trips, which can have enviromental and health benefits.
According to An Cathaoirleach, Cllr John Bailey, "European Mobility Week provides an excellent opportunity to highlight the health, economic and environmental benefits of using sustainable travel modes. It also provides an opportunity for the Council to learn from the European experience in developing and promoting sustainable travel".
The Mobility Week programme in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown is part-funded from the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, and further information on the Week's events is available from Gerry Flaherty, DLRCC's Sustainable Travel Officer (01-2047945), on www.dlrcoco.ie or www.mobilityweek.eu.
