Powerchair Football World Cup Trials

Powerchair Football-World Cup TrialsPowerchair Football-World Cup Trials

Last Saturday 22nd January, Irish powersoccer took another great step forward with the AIPF World Cup Trials held at the University of Limerick Sports Arena. Twenty of Ireland's top players were selected to compete for places in the Irish squad that will compete in the FIPFA World Cup in Paris in November of this year.

Watched by team manager Liam McDonough, five teams demonstrated their abilities. Players had their technique, teamwork and tactical awareness evaluated as well as traditional attack and defence abilities. The teams assembled were a mix of players and coaches from different clubs. This provided both the opportunity and challenge of playing with different players.

The games themselves were very exciting as players, without the pressures of club competition, tried new things and in the words of one coach "let the ball do the work". The quality of Powersoccer played and the skills on show will have given everyone great hope for Paris 2011 as well as a massive selection headache for Liam and selectors Nick and Senan.

The future is very bright for Irish Powersoccer. The calibre of player and quality of football is ever improving and with the upcoming World Cup, we will have a chance to showcase ourselves on the National Stage. The World Cup squad will be announced this week, congratulations to everyone who participated in Saturday's events and good luck to Team Ireland and the AIPF in the future.

Hopefully, local team St. Joseph's Powerchair Football squad will be represented on the World Cup squad! Watch this space to find out soon!
