- Provision of information and links on activities for people with disabilities
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Sports Partnership was successful in securing funding for a Sports Inclusion Disability Officer (SIDO) for the county of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, this post was appoointed to Brian O Donnell who succeeded Phena O Connor after her 8 years of successful disability inclusion programmes.
In 2006, the Dormant Accounts Fund earmarked €2m nationally for projects that address the imbalance in opportunities for people with physical, intellectual and sensory disabilities to participate in sport and physical activity. The Irish Sports Council, in collaboration with the National Network of Local Sports Partnerships, identified the need to appoint dedicated SIDOs at county level in order to address current gaps in the provision of sport and recreation for this population.
Over the initial two-year term of the SIDO programme, participation rates in sport and active recreation of people with disabilities in the County were increased. SIDO's were responsible for developing activities and programmes, providing information and increasing awareness, while addressing training and education needs for schools, clubs and leisure facilities for disability groups. New programmes were established where gaps in provision existed, while support was provided to existing sports clubs and groups for people with a disability. Furthermore, work undertaken supported the work of the Local Sports Partnership.
The initial two-year programme was extended following national and local successes, and the Sports Inclusion Disability Programme became an integral part of the LSP initiative nationwide. Counties that do not have a dedicated development officer for disability sport have access to ISC funds to roll out local disability sports projects.
Brian O Donnell has great experience of working in the area of disability sports incluision having previously worked for Stewarts Care as an adapted physical activity officer, Carmona Services as a sports development officer and numerous volunteer roles with special olympics Leinster/Ireland and the enjoy tennis programme.
