SURF 2 HEAL DLR, JULY 2010

- Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Sports Partnership in association with East Coast Surf Club and Freedom Surf School.

On Thursday 1st July, 20 volunteers from a local Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown based surf club, East Coast Surf Club, and staff of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Sports Partnership travelled to Freedom Surf School in Tramore, Co. Waterford, for four days of fun.

Surf 2 Heal began in Cork a few years ago, and is a surfing initiative for children with an autism spectrum disorder. East Coast Surf Club and Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Sports Partnership wanted to run a Surf 2 Heal camp for children from the County, and so Surf 2 Heal DLR was born!

19 children from this County and beyond participated in the 4-day programme, where qualified instructors and the eager volunteers taught the basics of surfing and supported the children on their boards. By the end of the four days most of the children were standing on their boards unaided, and all had the experience of a lifetime.

Much credit must go to the volunteers from East Coast Surf Club under the guidance of club secretary Shane Holohan, Freedom Surf School's Billy Butler and his family and staff, and the parents of the children who bought into this initiative wholeheartedly and encouraged their children every step of the way. And the sun shone each day!

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Sports Partnership's Sports Inclusion Disability Programme aims to increase participation rates of people with disabilities in sport and physical activity.
